"CAPTAIN GRANT'S INN was originally built by Captain William Gonzales Grant in 1754 for his wife Mercy Adelaide Avery. Grant died at sea, while Mercy lived into her 80's and the home continued to house three generations of the Grant Family. During the Revolutionary War, soldiers used the home as a Garrison, and during the Civil War, the home protected runaway slaves. A major restoration took place from 1994 through 1996. Today, the Inn stands restored to its original grandeur and prominence in this national Historic Village."
