Found amidst many of Maine's mountainous splendours, is the pretty historic town of Bethel where you can explore some of the best scenic hiking, don’t miss the Grafton Notch State Park with the Mother Walker Falls, Step Falls, Moose Cave and the famed Screw Auger Falls, where the amazing swirling waters of the Bear River have dug deep down into the river bed of solid rock. Another unusual feature of the gorge is the natural bridge not seen anywhere else in Maine. Downtown you can visit Dr. Moses Mason’s 1813 house, this popular museum contains regional archives, exhibit areas and an auditorium for films, lectures and special programs. The beautiful Sebago Lake Area shouldn’t go amiss, a popular summer destination famous for trout fishing and landlocked salmon. Sebago Lake Park consists of 1300 acres of lakefront along the picturesque Songo River. Close by is Naples and Rumford being the site of the country's first gold strike! The town of Kingfield surrounded by the Lone Fellow Mountains and the well-known Carrabassett River Valley boasts some of the best skiing on Sugarloaf Mountain, during the summer visitors can change their skis for golf clubs and enjoy the excellent 18 holes golf course. Don’t forget Rangeley and its wonderful lakes, here you’ll find an unusual but splendid golf course perched 2,000 feet above sea level giving you spectacular panoramic views, there are also endless nature trails, picnicking, swimming, fishing and boating. In the winter months you can ski and trek the 100 miles of well-groomed snow-mobile trails. Other interesting towns that are worthy of a visit with good bases for exploring the surrounding areas are: Bridgton, Farmingdale, Durham, New Portland, Oquossoc, West Forks, South Paris and Straton, all offering superb and stylish accommodations.
A worthwhile visit to the quaint town of Lewiston is where the State of Maine Parade is held every spring and draws thousands of spectators. It’s a growing arts community where artists flock here because of the magnificent landscape found along the Androscoggin River. It has a diverse culture of French influence with a friendly community. There are splendid towns and quaint villages to visit with galleries and museums to explore or you can opt for the great outdoors and explore Mount Blue State Park in the town of Weld, Mount Blue State Park provides more than 1,200 acres for fishing, picnic areas, sightseeing and hiking trails.
